私は那須でインバウンド向けのサイクリングツアーガイドとして活動しています。海外から訪れるお客様に、那須の自然、歴史、文化、そして地域の魅力をお伝えする仕事に携わり、今年で3年目になりました。

インバウンド観光の現場では、英語力と日本の歴史知識だけではなく、気候・地理・経済・文化について幅広い知識が求められる時があります。先日、全国通訳案内士の方である Ineko Hatake さんとご一緒する機会があり、久しぶりに「学ぶことの大切さ」を思い出しました。

全国通訳案内士との出会い

Inekoさんはアメリカで育った経験を持つバイリンガルで、非常に高い英語力をお持ちです。しかし、私が最も感銘を受けたのは、その英語力以上に豊富な知識と説明力でした。

日本の歴史、地理、経済、文化、さらには海外との比較まで幅広く理解されており、海外からのお客様に対して、まるで校外学習の先生のように分かりやすく説明されていました。

お客様から質問があれば、その場で的確に答えるだけでなく、関連する知識や背景と、自分の主観までお話しされていました。その姿を見ながら、「彼女には敵わないな、カッコいいな」と感じました。同時に、『私も 全国通訳案内士 になりたい』と初めてはっきり思いました。

インバウンドツアーガイドに必要な知識とは

これまで私も、那須や日光などの歴史や地域文化について学びながらガイドを続けてきました。

しかし今回の出会いを通じて、特に次の分野については、さらに深く学ぶ必要があると感じました。

• 日本の近現代史
• 日本の地理
• 日本の経済
• 政治や社会の仕組み
• 海外との文化比較

海外から訪れるお客様は、日本の観光地だけでなく、日本社会そのものにも興味を持っています。

「なぜ日本には空き家が多いのか？」
「日本の人口減少はどうなっているのか？」
「初めての女性の総理大臣に関してどう思うか？」

こうした質問に英語で適切に深く答えられるガイドは、お客様にとって非常に価値の高い存在だと思います。

学び続けることが未来につながる

お話を伺うと、Inekoさんは毎年海外のツアーにも参加し、自ら学び続けているそうです。

知識や経験を積み重ねることで、お客様からの信頼につながり、ガイドとしての説得力も生まれるのだと感じました。

今回の出会いは、私自身の将来についても考えるきっかけになりました。

来年には娘が小学校に入学します。歴史や地理、政治や経済について学ぶことは、ガイドとしてだけでなく、親として子どもの学びを支える力にもなるでしょう。

また、現在の職場でのポジションの変化や、地域を通して後輩たちを育成する側になる機会が増えるかもしれません。さらに将来的には、定年後も個人ガイドとして活動し、収入を得ながら英語を使って旅行ができる可能性が広がるのではないかと思っています。

まずは小さな一歩から

大きな目標も、最初の一歩から始まります。私の オリンピック出場経験 と、米国公認会計士 試験合格に至るまでの本当の最初の一歩も、まずはやってみる・始めてみる、といった新しいチャレンジから始まったのを1つ1つ鮮明に覚えています。

◎ 昨夜（ 2026年 6月8日 ）から禁酒をスタートしました。

◎ 翌朝から早朝ジョギングを始めました。翌日夜から毎日1時間の勉強を始めています。

どうやったらできるか考えて、　みんちゃれ　というアプリを活用しています。

全国通訳案内士試験の受験者にも人気がある ハロー通訳アカデミー の無料資料を活用しながら、日本史、地理、経済、観光英語について学んでいこうと思います。

栃木県から世界へ

栃木県には、豊かな自然、美しい景観、温泉、酪農文化、そして日光など長い歴史があります。

インバウンド観光がますます重要になるこれからの時代、地域の魅力を世界へ伝えるためには、ガイド自身も学び続ける必要があります。

今回の Ineko さんとの出会いは、私にとって大きな刺激となりました。

より良いインバウンドツアーガイドとして。
より良い母親として。
そして、人生の最後に「よく学び、よく挑戦した人生だった」と思えるように。

これからも一歩ずつ前進していきたいと思います。

What a Cycling Tour Guide in Nasu Learned from a Licensed National Government Guide Interpreter

Insights for Inbound Tourism in the Nasu–Nikko Region

I work as a cycling tour guide for international visitors in Nasu, Japan. This year marks my third year introducing overseas guests to the region’s nature, history, culture, and local way of life.

In the field of inbound tourism, strong English skills and knowledge of Japanese history are important. However, there are many occasions when guides are also expected to have a broad understanding of geography, climate, economics, and culture.

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Ineko Hatake, a Licensed National Government Guide Interpreter. Meeting her reminded me of something I had almost forgotten: the importance of continuous learning.

Meeting a Licensed National Government Guide Interpreter

Ineko grew up in the United States and is bilingual, with exceptional English communication skills. What impressed me most, however, was not her English ability, but the depth of her knowledge and her remarkable ability to explain complex topics clearly.

She possesses a broad understanding of Japanese history, geography, economics, culture, and even international comparisons. When speaking with overseas visitors, she explained things in a way that reminded me of an outstanding school teacher on a field trip—engaging, informative, and easy to understand.

Whenever guests asked questions, she not only provided accurate answers on the spot but also shared relevant background information and her own perspective. Watching her work, I found myself thinking, “I can't compete with her. She is amazing.”

For the first time, I clearly thought to myself:

“I want to become a Licensed National Government Guide Interpreter, too.”

What Knowledge Does an Inbound Tour Guide Need?

Over the years, I have continued learning about the history and culture of Nasu and Nikko while guiding visitors.

However, this experience made me realize that I need to deepen my knowledge in several key areas:

• Modern and contemporary Japanese history
• Japanese geography
• Japan’s economy
• Politics and social systems
• Cross-cultural comparisons

International visitors are often interested not only in tourist attractions but also in Japanese society itself.

Questions I have received include:

• Why are there so many vacant houses in Japan?
• What is happening with Japan’s declining population?
• What are your thoughts on the possibility of Japan having its first female prime minister?

A guide who can answer these questions thoughtfully and confidently in English provides tremendous value to visitors.

Lifelong Learning Opens New Opportunities

When we spoke, Ineko told me that she continues to participate in tours overseas every year as part of her own learning journey.

Her commitment to learning reminded me that knowledge and experience build trust with guests and make a guide's explanations more credible and meaningful.

This encounter also encouraged me to think about my own future.

Next year, my daughter will begin elementary school. Studying history, geography, politics, and economics will not only help me become a better guide but also allow me to support my daughter's education as a parent.

In addition, my role at work may evolve, and I may have more opportunities to mentor younger colleagues within our community. Looking even further ahead, I hope to continue working as an independent tour guide after retirement, earning income while using English and traveling.

Starting with Small Steps

Every major achievement begins with a single step.

I still vividly remember that both my experience of competing in the Olympics and my journey toward passing the U.S. CPA examination started with one simple decision:

Just begin.

On June 8, 2026, I took my first steps.

• I stopped drinking alcohol.
• The following morning, I started jogging early in the morning.
• Beginning the next evening, I committed to studying for one hour every day.

To help me stay accountable, I have been using a Japanese habit-building app called MinChalle.

I also plan to study Japanese history, geography, economics, and tourism English using the free study materials provided by Hello Tsuyaku Academy, a well-known school among candidates preparing for the Licensed National Government Guide Interpreter Examination.

From Tochigi to the World

Tochigi Prefecture is blessed with abundant nature, beautiful landscapes, hot springs, a rich dairy farming culture, and a long history represented by places such as Nikko.

As inbound tourism continues to grow in importance, guides themselves must continue learning in order to share the region's unique appeal with the world.

Meeting Ineko was a powerful source of inspiration for me.

To become a better inbound tour guide.

To become a better mother.

And ultimately, to look back on my life and say:

“I learned deeply, embraced challenges, and made the most of my opportunities.”

With that goal in mind, I will continue moving forward—one step at a time.
